It is time to drop the other shoe 和 Waiting for the other shoe to drop

It is just a matter of time before the other shoe drops. Unless income rises significantly faster than it has, many more households will have to raise the white flag in the battle with their debt burdens. (Christian E. Weller, “Upside-Down” Economy Takes a Bite out of Middle Class Wallets, The Center for American Progress, May 28, 2004)

Andrew Foster: The private sector has still not been fully transparent about this issue in Asia, but what I think might be the other shoe to drop is the exposure that public institutions or quasi-public-sector institutions might bear. (Susan Kitchens, Markets Mayhem And China, Asia, Forbes, Sep. 3, 2007)

另外,值得我们注意的是,drop the other shoe 的习语表达并不是完全固定不变的,如上述两个例句中的表达分别为:before the other shoe drops 和 the other shoe to drop

[in stride: 1. Without interference with regular activities

1. at the drop of a hat [informal] 一有机会就······;立即;毫不迟疑:Immediately and without hesitating. 如:

He’s the sort of person who can sing any song at all at the drop of a hat.

2. drop the ball [AmE, informal] 犯错,失职:Make a mistake and spoil sth that you are responsible for. 如:

I could use some help. I don’t want to drop the ball on this one.

He thinks that you dropped the ball on the Swiss project.

Announce sth which is unexpected and usually unpleasant. 如:

It was then that he dropped the bombshell --- he wasn’t planning to come with us.

4. drop a brick/clanger [BrE, informal](无意中)失言伤人,行为鲁莽:say or do sth that offends or embarrasses sb, although you did not intend to.如:

I dropped a real clanger when I mentioned the party. He hadn’t been invited.

5. drop sb in it [BrE, informal](尤指因泄露秘密)使尴尬,使狼狈不堪:Put sb in an embarrassing situation, especially by telling a secret that you should not have told. 如:

Don’t mention Paul to my parents or you’ll really drop me in it --- I haven’t told them about him yet.

6. a drop in the ocean [BrE] [AmE: a drop in the bucket] 沧海一粟,九牛一毛:Avery small amount in comparison to the much larger amount that is needed. 如:

$10 million is only a drop in the ocean compared to what is needed to help these people effectively.
